Final Fantasy VII turned 29 over the weekend; that fact, in itself, may be a surreal pill to swallow for those of us who played it on its original hardware.

Later this year, Crisis Core will turn 19. The period of time in which the truth behind Zack Fair, Cloud’s mysterious mentor, was obscured to us is dwindling. He’s become a beloved character in his own right ever since, with many fans cheering to see him return in a remastered version of his game, or in FFVII Rebirth.

So let’s delve deeper into what Crisis Core brought to the proverbial table, protect our honour, and ask ourselves: did Zack become a hero?
