Welcome to the Kupo Chronicle, the premium edition of the Wark Digest newsletter, where we explore the Final Fantasy universe in long-form and drill down into unique moments of the series’ history. I’m Chris, aka Hoogathy, and in this installment we’ve dug into a treasure trove of information on a once-beloved sub-franchise, and found its downfall may have been foretold long ago…

This week’s newsletter is 2413 words, a 11-minute read.

Wark Digest from Final Fantasy Union is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

The Future Of Discord

Once among the renowned subseries of Final Fantasy, Dissidia has fallen into stasis in recent years, following the lacklustre reception of its latest installment, Dissidia NT. As a home adaptation of a popular Arcade game, and the first game in the series in 7 years, there were high hopes for NT. Unfortunately, many didn’t gel with its 3-on-3 gameplay, or the way its single-player story mode unfolded.

However, this shift may not have been entirely as abrupt as it seemed at the time. Even back in 2011, in the wake of Dissidia Duodecim’s release, a departure from the proven PSP formula was in the cards… as seen in some staff interviews we’ve dug up.

(And, since the whole situation is a bit of a bummer to big Dissidia fans like me, we’ll dig up some other interesting tidbits as we go along!)
